“You aren’t washed up until you’re washed up in a small town in Germany.” With these words of comic despair, so begins a magical mystery tour that retells the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Tom (Orpheus) is an American songwriter and musician who, after many years on the road, lands in Germany. Stuck in Europe and overlooked by fame, the musician will do almost anything to get home. Tom agrees to tour backwater Russian towns playing his melancholy acoustic ballads, however. His fatal decision to accept this one last tour lands him in hot water with cold-blooded Russian mafia. It also triggers an amorous adventure with the stunning but messed-up Natascha (Eurydice), a Russian who's come to Germany to marry wealthy businessman Karl (Aristaios), and who leaves Karl at the altar. Broke, homeless and on the run, Tom and Natascha’s trip takes on proportions—from idyllic moments spent with a gypsy circus to a descent into a terrifying mountain bunker nightclub/brothel. Never fear, reality has an ace up her sleeve. Mika Kaurismäki studied cinema in Munich, Germany, (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen) 1977-1981 and made his diploma film The Liar in 1980 in Finland. Kaurismäki has lived in Rio de Janeiro on and off for 10 years, having travelled to Brazil to make the documentary Tigrero with Sam Fuller and Jim Jarmusch in 1993. -AHS
