DIRECTOR: Jake Mahaffy CAST: Paul Mahaffy, Jef Clark, Andy Yurick, Dustin Bertch
With only a single hand-cranked camera, first time director Jake Mahaffy has managed to make an impressive and haunting debut. WAR follows the lives of three isolated characters struggling to find their place in a decaying rural landscape of America. The inhabitants of this countryside are shrouded in mystery. Through three intertwining vignettes we are introduced to a farmer, a junkman, and a radio preacher as overheard by a young boy. Although produced with an innovative narrative style that lacks a conventional plot and dialogue, WAR nevertheless, effectively finds a uniquely ominous voice. This portrait of an almost apocalyptic world lacks a clear definition of time and place, but there becomes a sense that it is all too close to home. -BWJake Mahaffy was born and raised in rural Ohio. He studied At the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI before moving to Moscow. While there, he attended the Russian State Institute of Cinematography. Mahaffy then returned to the states where and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and began work on his first feature film WAR.
