Japanese producer Taku USHIYAMA enlisted nine up-and-coming directing and acting talents from Japan, Mainland China, and Taiwan to create a moving, sometimes sad, and surprisingly truthful contemplation of the nature of love. The film consists of three vignettes that together expose what may (secretly) be our most important emotion as something alternately vague, unsure, sweet, and bitter. We travel to Asia’s central hubs-Tokyo, Taipei, and Shanghai- and in each city encounter a pair of would or wouldn’t be lovers suffering through those agonizing and exhilarating instants that make no logical sense, but give us what we live for. In the film’s sometimes overwhelming (and delicately photographed) urban milieus, the importance of human connection becomes at once ever more difficult and ever more compelling. In each story, a young man and a young woman cross over cultural boundaries and languages to discover those exquisite moments when one looks into another’s eyes and feels, however briefly, the utter absence of loneliness. SHIMOYAMA’s features include Cute (’97), Otogiriso (‘02) and Muscle Heat (’03). YEE Chih-yen attended UCLA for film production. He made his debut with Lonely Hearts Club (‘95). YEE's feature Blue Gate Crossing (’02) was a smashing success at Cannes. ZHANG’s first feature, Spring Subway, received raves in China, where he is also an esteemed music video director. –EC
