CAST: Nicole Seriault, Siriyakorn Pukkavesh

An atypical entry fron Thailand, One Night Husband embodies genre cinema at its finest. Utilizing a variety of techniques from studio-system special effects to roving cameras to the old watch through the window trick to build suspense, the film is at its most terrifying in its quietist moments. Lightening flashes and a mobile phone pierces the silence, accompanied only by rumbles of quiet thunder. A new bride answers her husbands phone. He disappears. A woman requests a shower at the home of her sister-in-law, only to steal into the bedroom and discover a gun in the bedside drawer. Cooking dinner one night, two women guiltily discuss their disappointing marriages. A shopping trip results in tears, a subsequent beating, and a moment of shared connection. Compelling, sinister, unusual, and poignant, the film investigates gender roles in Thai society while challenging conventional expectations of genre cinema. Dubbed by some critics as “the female David Lynch,” Towira cites Maya Deren and Ozu as among her biggest influences, and it shows. She manages to incorporate multifarious cinematic styles in one thrilling picture. Pimpaka Towira is the first female Thai director to gain recognition from international viewers and critics. She studied at Thammasat University before stints as a film journalist, and acted as the programming director of the Bangkok Film Festival in ‘01. She made several noted experimental short films before delving into her first feature project, One Night Husband. –EC
