Maan should be in the prime of her life—but instead of enjoying it, she has to grapple with the loss of her lover to cancer. Haunted by his death, she lives a life full of loneliness and feelings of injustice. She leaves Hong Kong, where everything that surrounds her reminds her both of her formerly happy life and the fact that it no longer exists. She travels to the Mainland to Qingdao in search of the landscape that her lover spoke of in his final days. Obsessed with finding this essential piece of him, she steadfastly searches, armed only with his sketches. While she looks, she makes the acquaintance of Lit, a postman who offers to help. Their bizarre quest causes both lonely souls to rediscover their place in an arbitrary and gorgeous world. Awe-inspiring cinematography and winsome animation serve to illuminate the indescribably beauty of the Chinese countryside and those who inhabit it.Born on October 28, 1966 in Hong Kong, Carol LAI joined the film industry in ‘89 as an assistant director. Her first work was the short Father's Toys (’98), which made the worldwide festival circuit, and feature debut was Glass Tears (’01), which was invited to the Director's Fortnight at Cannes among countless other festivals. This is her second feature. –EC
