DIRECTOR: Kelly Saxberg
CAST: Taimi Pitkanen,

Taimi Pitkanen last saw her brother Aate (AH-tay) in a Leningrad railway station in 1931. Sixty years later, the discovery of his last letters – written but never mailed from a Finnish prisoner-of-war camp – reveals his fate and brings together Taimi and Alfred, the son Aate never met. Alfred follows his father’s journey from Thunder Bay, Ontario, to Karelia, from young communist pioneer to ski champion of the USSR to Soviet spy. Kelly Saxberg directed and edited Rosies of the North (1999), a National Film Board documentary about the women who built Hurricane and Helldiver airplanes during the Second World War. Banana Split, co-directed and edited by Kelly, is a documentary about the most popular fruit in Canada. It recently won the first annual Deborah Fletcher Award of Excellence in Filmmaking on International Development. Kelly also edited the immensely popular television series Pioneer Quest.
