Rose/Roy alternates his time between his life as a drag queen that travels around with a troupe that takes the place of his family and his “real” life as a Taoist priest. While traveling in the troupe’s brightly colored vehicle/performance stage, Rose meets Sunny, a good-natured small town man who tells Rose and her compatriots that rather than thinking they’re weird, he finds them refreshingly free. Rose and Sunny plunge into a passionate love affair. But when Sunny is accidentally drowned , Rose’s brief happiness shatters. Sunny’s family conducts traditional funeral rites, and Roy performs the service. At night, however, Rose and her cross-dressing sisters bid Sunny their own farewell. CHOU’s rumination on what it means to belong is a moving character study given heart by a pitch-perfect performance by James CHEN. Born in Keelung, Taiwan in 1969, Zero CHOU earned a B.A. in Philosophy. She entered into filmmaking because of her attraction to the combination of content and form. She has been heralded as “ the most talented document director in the recent years of Taiwan.” She has also received various festival awards around the world for films including Black Name (’99), A Film About the Body (’96), Floating Islands-Before the Radiation (’99), Poles Extremity (’02), and Timewalker (’03). –EC
