DIRECTOR: RHYTHM IS IT! CAST: Sir Simon Rattle, Royston Muldoon
Movie spectaculars don’t come much better than this! Sir Simon Rattle (successor to the great Von Karajan) and the Berlin Philharmonic, Stravinsky’s pounding, percussive Rite of Spring. 250 Berlin children representing 25 nations, none of whom had ever anything to do with either classical music, whipped into a stellar ballet troupe performing the piece in an old bus depot before 3,000 spectators. Facing the same conditions as the dancers, veteran filmmakers Grube and Lansch had 45 days to record the extraordinary rehearsals with both dancers and newly arrived Sir Simon and his world famous musicians in the first major work under his baton. Not only do the non-professional, aspiring teenagers under British choreographer Royston Muldoon need to develop their artistic skills fast, he must motivate these youth. Mostly from poor, disenfranchised neighborhoods, they find their creative centers and unleash a potential they never knew they had. Thomas Grube was born in 1971 in Berlin. After studying Political Science and Eastern European Studies, he studied Film at the "Konrad Wolf" Academy of Film & Television (HFF/B) in Potsdam-Babelsberg.. –Al Milgrom
