DIRECTOR: SUSAN KAPLAN CAST: Sam Cagnina, Steven Margolin, Samantha Singh
As same-sex marriage has vaulted to the top of the issues list on the national political scene, it has taken on an emotionless façade: Those against it see it as a divisive symbol of a country that has lost its way; those for it as a human right as unalienable as voting. What gets lost in the debate is love. Sam and Stephen fell in love at first sight and spent nearly 10 years together before they felt that something was missing. When they met Toronto native Samantha, they knew what that something was. The three built a bond as unbreakable as any two-way relationship. After nearly a decade together, the trio decided to have a child, and the challenges they face are emboldened by their commitment. Kaplan capture more than a sideshow story of strange people i a strange land, but a touching love story that just happens to be 50 percent larger than most. Susan Kaplan (Miami Beach), a graduate of New York University, has produced many feature documentaries, including Small Wonders (1995), nominated for an Academy Award. She also produced the narrative adaptation The Music of the Heart (1999), directed by Wes Craven, and has directed several short documentaries. Three of Hearts: A Postmodern Family is her feature documentary debut as a director.-AHS
