Stella (Cuneta, one of Philippines’ biggest stars) is street smart, sexy, and a loving mother. But she just can’t quite catch a break. Her ex wants to move away, with her beloved son, BongBong in tow. Recently out of jail, she can hardly claim to be stable enough to take care of BongBong herself. But things start to brighten up when Wilson appears. Not only does he (unknowingly) bestow upon her a pair of shiny new Oakleys, he also offers her the chance of a lifetime when he pays her to wail at his father’s funeral. Enter the last of the professional mourners of Manila's Chinatown. Stella enlists Doray, aka Rhoda Rivera, a b-movie star of yesteryear, and Choleng, a diehard Catholic who just can’t keep her hands off her friend’s husband. Subtle insights into ritual and loss surface throughout the story, creating a delightful ensemble comedy punctuated with a hard edge. It sheds light on antiquated cultural practices and the struggles and little dreams of ordinary people living in the back streets of Chinatown. Mark Meily started writing and directing short films in 1987, for which he won several CCP Alternative Film and Video awards. He directed Crying Ladies from his Palana Award-winning script, which was entitled Bayad Luha. It is his first feature. –EC
