DIRECTOR: Chris Kennedy CAST: John Howard, Rebecca Frith, Alyssa McClelland, Gyton Grantley Amie McKenna
In the New South Wales seaside town of Shellharbour, burly fisherman Eddy is anxious to please his showy wife Yvonne. He takes on an odd job gig as a hitman-for-hire to supplement needed income and ward off family problems. He throws himself into the job, even enlisting a timid sidekick named Dominic. Determined to build a happy household, Eddy finds his family unity tested further when his daughter Chantelle, l9, is jilted by her no-good Russian fiancé and begins to show some interest in a local handyman. In this quirky Down Under comedy, director Chris Kennedy, 43. shows a knack for creating eccentric characters akin to his previous efforts Doing Time for Patsy Cline and This Won’t Hurt a Bit. Howard (not the current Aussie PM) is a slow-burning Edgar Kennedy-type with a deadpan delivery and Ms McClelland looks like a young Liv Ullmann. Out of the crazy-clan Aussie comedy mould, Variety noted that A Man’s Gotta Do is kind of like “Basil Faulty meets Tony Soprano.”Australian filmmaker Chris Kennedy's day job is as a dentist. He has written, directed and produced four feature films including Doing Time For Patsy Cline(1997). -AM
