In 1942, controversial philosopher Martin Heidegger delivered a series of lectures centering on German mater poet Friedrich Holderin’s epic poem, The Ister. By then an embattled figure in the world of philosophy, Heideggr’s lectures took the Ister as a leaping-off point for a philosophical inquiry into the chaosof modern Germany even as its future went up in smoke. Filmmakers Bariosn and Ross manage the rare feat of rendering philosophy in cinematic terms, jeuxtaposing their lush, saturated images of the Danube—the Ister of the title—as it wind its way through the lasting chaos of modern Eastern Europe with commentary and reflection by some of the world’s greatest living philosopohers, including Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, and, finally, the filmmaker Hans-Jürgen Syberberg. At 189 minutes, The Ister is both a visual and intellectual feast unlike any other you will see, at once rigorous and yet strangely elating. Born in Melbourne in 1972, David Barison studied philosophy, politics and public relations before pursuing his love for filmmaking. Daniel Ross studied physics before making the move to study philosophy. The Ister is the debut film for both Barison and Ross.
