Twenty-five shorts , directed by a smattering of veteran established European filmmakers along with a host of “new wavers” all from participating European Union countries. The pan-continental film anthology creates a veritable “cinematic European Song Contest, without the high kitsch level but with a similar bell-curve of quality,” wrote Leslie Felperin ,Variety critic. There are enough surprises, tongue-in-cheek tweeking the EU Belgian bureaucrats and insightful reflections on the downside by wary Europeans on both sides of the federalist political spectrum to intrigue most viewers. Danish production house Zentropa (Lars von Trier’s company) commissioned directors and gave them the open-ended task to create “a personal vision of current or future life” in Europaland. The only limitations were to stick to a video shooting format and not run over five minutes. ( film will have a 5-min. intermission half way through) The list of filmmakers includes: Barbara Albert (Austria), Stijn Coninx (Belgium), Christos Georgiou (Cyprus), Sasa Gedeon (Czech Republic), Christoffer Boe (Denmark), Arvo Iho (Estonia), Aki Kaurismäki (Finland), Tony Gatlif (France), Fatih Akin (Germany), Peter Greenaway (Great Britain), Constantin Giannaris (Greece), Bela Tarr (Hungary), Aisling Walsh (Ireland), Francesca Comencini (Italy), Laila Pakalnina (Latvia), Sharunas Bartas (Lithuania), Andy Bausch (Luxembourg), Kenneth Scicluna (Malta), Theo van Gogh (Netherlands), Malgorzata Szumowska (Poland), Teresa Villaverde (Portugal), Martin Sulik (Slovakia), Damjan Kozole (Slovenia), Miguel Hermoso (Spain), Jan Troell (Sweden). – Å.M.
