A group of female colleagues chat over lunch. We eavesdrop as they discuss the men in their lives and carve out their place as women in a male-dominated society. They laugh and push the boundaries of what is an acceptable topic of conversation. The viewer is instantly captivated, which makes the entrance of one of the woman’s husbands all the more startling and disturbing. After this powerhouse opening, the narrative turns to Fershteh, in mourning after the death of her husband, and her oppressive father-law, who wants custody of her two children. Tradition and modernism clash as the two stand in for modern Iran, a nation plagued by the conflicting philosophies of hard-line religious groups and an educated, cosmopolitan population. Born in Tabriz, Iran, in 1960, internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Tahmineh Milani is no stranger to controversy. Her depiction of the events of ’79, The Hidden Half (’01), landed her in jail for two weeks, charged with supporting counterrevolutionaries. Khatami’s reformist government and female filmmakers around the world petitioned for her release, which occurred after some two weeks. A life-long lover of cinema and an outspoken feminist, she has fought against all odds to make films including Two Women (‘99), Kakadu (‘96) What Else Is New? (‘92), and The Legend of a Sigh (’91). –EC (106 minutes)
