A quirky and kinky culture-clash tale of a pregnant young punker and the elderly residents of the border town she winds up in, Mila From Mars plumbs visual humor (think fur coats and hotpants contrasted with babushkas) as well as more subtle delights. When Mila discovers that her ancient neighbors have a green leafy secret up their collective sleeves, she begins to unwind in her newfound paradise. Things really start to look up when a hunky Buddhist rock-climber rolls into town. Mila begins to form a happy family, but her past isn’t far behind. An indictment of modern society that manages to be at once scintillating and fun, this is quite unlike anything you’ll see this year. At the recent Sarajevo Film Festival, the jury (headed by veteran British director Mike Leigh), awarded the ensemble cast a special prize, and the film took top honors among the special nine-film Balkan competition section. -ECBorn in 1972, Zornitsa Sophia earned a Master’s degree in fine arts from the National Art Academy in Sofia, has specialized advertising at the American University, Washington, and at the Visual Arts School in New York. She has worked as an art director and a costume maker. This is her first feature.
